Three Big Cats That Need Our Help

You may have heard of an Iberian Lynx, perhaps of an Amur Leopard, or maybe, just maybe, an Asiatic Cheetah. These three big cats are pretty different from one another, but they all have one thing in common: they are very endangered, and they need our help.

Iberian Lynx

The Iberian Lynx is an elusive cat. Like its silvery-gray cousin, the Canada Lynx, the Iberian Lynx sports the black tufts found on the tip of the ears. It lives in two very small regions of Southern Spain. Only an estimated 150 Iberian Lynxes remain in the wild. It is just about the third most endangered cat in the world.

Asiatic Cheetah

Most people don’t even realize that cheetahs exist in Asia. But there is a small population of cheetahs in Iran: the Asiatic Cheetah. It lives near the mining areas, which present a number of problems for the cheetah. Mining itself isn’t a threat, but loss of food, habitat loss, and poaching are large threats. The Asiatic Cheetah is probably the second most endangered cat in the world, with an estimated 50-70 left.

Amur Leopard

The most endangered feline would have to be the Amur Leopard. This striking subspecies of the regular Leopard is only found in an extremely small area consisting of a corner of North Korea, Northeast China, and Southeast Russia. Deforestation and poaching are very major threats, coupled with the fact that they only breed about once every two years. There are only 30-40 individuals left in the wild!

Luckily, there is hope. Donating to causes like World Wildlife Fund and refusing to buy products with body parts of the big cats are good steps. But the most important step of all is to spread the word.
